GITING NG DUYAN

What Their Stories Revealed

When the team first entered the community, they came not just with questions, but with open ears. As the Aeta mothers shared their stories, a clearer picture emerged: one shaped not by numbers, but by lived experiences.

Home births remain common, not merely as a traditional choice, but because many Aeta mothers face real barriers long before labor begins. The nearest birthing facilities are far, the only clinic in the area remains unlicensed, transportation is limited, and the cost of seeking care often exceeds what families can afford.

From the mothers and midwives interviewed, it became evident that home birthing was once a cultural practice. Today, under the No Homebirth Policy, it occurs mostly out of necessity when a mother is delayed on the road or cannot reach the hospital in time.

During our visit, it was clear how the land itself imposes challenges. Long distances, steep paths, and scattered residences make access to healthcare difficult and uncertain, especially when every second counts.
